Why Voyage Rare
Not every good hotel is rare.
There are thousands of perfectly good places to stay. We are interested in the smaller number that give you a reason to travel specifically for them.
Sometimes that means a farmhouse at the end of a dirt road. Sometimes it is a merchant house by a harbour, a working wine estate or an inn that simply gets everything right.
Price, star ratings and fashionable addresses are not the deciding factors. Character is.
How we work
Selection before coverage.
We pay our way
We pay for our stays. When one is offered to us, it is disclosed at the top of the review rather than hidden in a footnote.
We leave most places out
A hotel can be comfortable, polished and well run without being distinctive enough to appear on Voyage Rare.
Price is not a criterion
A €90 inn can be rare. A generic five-star never is. The question is whether the place is worth remembering.
Our approach
Depth before scale.
We would rather understand a handful of regions properly than publish a superficial guide to everywhere. Coverage grows slowly, as we travel, revisit and find places we would genuinely recommend to someone making the same journey.
