Where we go
Three regions.
A deeper perspective.
Alentejo
Fortified farmhouses inland, where a night sometimes costs less than €120.
Beaujolais & Bugey
Working wine estates that take guests, an hour from Lyon.
Seto Inland Sea
Merchant houses and harbour inns between Onomichi and Takamatsu.
Our principles
A more thoughtful way to travel.
No hotel buys its way in
We pay for our stays. When one is offered to us, it is stated at the top of the review, not buried in a footnote.
What we leave out
Chain resorts, conference hotels dressed up as country houses, and anything competent but interchangeable.
Price is not a criterion
A €90 inn can be rare. A generic five-star never is. Read how we choose

The notebook
One address, twice a month.
What we have just seen, what we turned down, and why. Nothing else.
No spam. Just good places.
