HOTEL REVIEW · SALA COMACINA, LAKE COMO
Twelve rooms on the western shore of Lake Como, a restaurant facing the water and a private jetty just steps away. MUSA offers a smaller, more contemporary alternative to the lake’s grand historic hotels. After four nights, we found that its greatest strength was also its simplest: everything here feels close to the water.
Lake Como has no shortage of celebrated hotels. Grand villas, formal gardens and historic buildings have helped shape its reputation as one of Europe’s most desirable places to stay.
But there is another way to experience the lake.
MUSA Lago di Como sits directly on the waterfront in Sala Comacina, with just 12 rooms in its main hotel building. It has none of the scale or ceremony of the lake’s great palace hotels.
Instead, it offers contemporary interiors, intimate outdoor spaces, a restaurant and bar, a swimming pool and direct access to the water.
We stayed for four nights, paying for the experience ourselves. The room was very comfortable, the food was excellent and varied, and we were equally pleased with the service and facilities.
The price was our main reservation. On a lake where beautiful views are hardly unusual, MUSA still has to justify the considerable cost of staying here.
Sala Comacina, away from the crowds
MUSA occupies a particularly appealing stretch of Lake Como’s western shore, in the small village of Sala Comacina.
The hotel faces the water, with Isola Comacina just offshore and mountains rising on the opposite bank. It is a quieter setting than some of the lake’s more famous destinations, although those places are still accessible by road or boat.

That location matters. MUSA is not a hotel that asks guests to admire the lake from a distant hillside. Water is present from the terraces, the restaurant, the outdoor spaces and many of the rooms.
It changes the scale of the experience. The lake is not simply a panorama in the distance. It feels like the hotel’s immediate surroundings.

Twelve rooms, one defining view
MUSA has 12 individually conceived rooms, named after women who have inspired history and culture. The interiors are contemporary rather than nostalgic, with restrained colours, comfortable furnishings and large windows designed to keep the lake in focus.
It is a welcome contrast to the ornate interiors that remain part of the traditional Lake Como hotel experience.

Our own experience of the room was very positive. Comfort was one of its strongest qualities, particularly the bed, which made spending four nights here an easy proposition.
This is important in a hotel where the scenery inevitably receives so much attention. A view can make a strong first impression, but it cannot compensate for a room that fails at the basics.
At MUSA, we found the accommodation genuinely comfortable rather than simply attractive.
Some room categories include balconies or terraces, while others offer different perspectives across the lake. The precise room category is worth considering when booking, because the relationship with the water is a significant part of what makes MUSA appealing.
The pleasure of being this close to the water
Much of MUSA’s appeal comes from the way the outdoor spaces are arranged along the waterfront.
There are terraces, places to sit and sun loungers positioned towards the lake. These are relatively modest spaces compared with the extensive grounds of larger resorts, but their proximity to the water gives them a distinct character.

Lake Como is a place of constantly changing light. Boats pass, shadows move across the mountains and the water takes on different colours throughout the day.
At MUSA, the architecture gives those changes room to remain the main attraction.
There is no need for an enormous garden or an elaborate collection of decorative spaces when the lake is already so close.

Food that earns its place in the stay
A 12-room hotel has little room for an unconvincing restaurant, particularly when guests are paying Lake Como prices.
MUSA’s restaurant, ROTEO, takes a contemporary approach to Mediterranean cooking, drawing on Italian ingredients and international influences. The hotel also has GAIA, a bar offering cocktails and more informal dining.

Food was a highlight of our four-night stay.
We found the meals excellent, with plenty of variety. Breakfast and dinner were both experiences we appreciated, rather than simply convenient parts of the hotel package.
This matters particularly at MUSA. Staying in Sala Comacina does not provide the endless restaurant choices of a large city, and a hotel of this scale benefits enormously from having a restaurant worth spending time in.
Our experience of the food was entirely positive. It made the property feel more complete, rather than leaving the lake view to do all the work.

A small hotel with a considered set of facilities
Despite its size, MUSA offers more than a room and a restaurant.
Its outdoor swimming pool occupies a garden beside the hotel, with loungers, greenery and views towards the lake and mountains.

The property also offers a wellness area with a sauna, steam room and treatment rooms. Boat experiences and other activities on the lake can be arranged through the hotel.
We were very happy with the facilities and the service during our stay. At this scale, a positive experience across the different parts of the hotel makes a considerable difference.
There is no sprawling resort to explore. The appeal lies in having the important things close together: the room, the table, the pool and the waterfront.
The lake is more than a view
Lake Como is best understood from the water, and MUSA has the advantage of a jetty directly on its waterfront.
The hotel can arrange boat outings, allowing guests to experience the shoreline from a perspective that roads and lakeside terraces cannot provide.

That connection is important even if a boat excursion is not part of every guest’s itinerary.
It reinforces the idea that the lake is not merely a backdrop to the hotel. It is the reason the hotel is here.

What gives us pause
Our principal reservation about MUSA is straightforward: the price.
Lake Como is an expensive destination, and MUSA occupies the premium end of its hotel market. A small room count, a waterfront location and personalised service may help explain the rates, but none automatically guarantees good value.
During our stay, we appreciated the comfort, food, service and facilities. The experience was very positive, but the cost still deserves careful consideration.
There is also a question of scale. MUSA does not have the extensive grounds, multiple restaurants or range of public spaces found at some of Lake Como’s large historic resorts.
Its location in Sala Comacina is another deliberate choice. It offers a quieter setting, but travellers who want to move constantly between different towns and attractions will need to plan their transport.
These are not shortcomings we encountered in the quality of our stay. They are practical compromises to understand before booking.
Who should come
Come if you want a contemporary Lake Como hotel with an intimate atmosphere, direct access to the water and a restaurant that is part of the experience.
MUSA makes particular sense for couples, travellers who appreciate good food and people who prefer a small hotel to the formality of a grand resort.
It also suits those who want to spend meaningful time at the hotel itself rather than use their room only as a base for sightseeing.
Think twice if you expect extensive gardens, several restaurants, the atmosphere of a historic palace or a lower-priced introduction to Lake Como.
Its strengths are intimacy, comfort and proximity to the water, not size.
The Voyage Rare take
MUSA does not attempt to compete with Lake Como’s grandest hotels on their own terms.
Instead of monumental architecture and extensive grounds, it offers 12 rooms beside the lake, contemporary design and a more concentrated hotel experience.
After four nights, we found that approach convincing.
The room was very comfortable, the food was excellent and varied, and the service and facilities met the expectations we brought to the stay.
But what makes MUSA distinct is still its relationship with the lake. The waterfront is present from the restaurant, the terraces and the pool, with boats and mountains providing a constantly changing backdrop.
The high price remains its principal compromise. This is not a hotel to choose merely because Lake Como is fashionable or because the photographs are attractive.
Its appeal is more specific: twelve rooms, an exceptionally close relationship with the water, and enough substance in the rooms, food and service to make a four-night stay satisfying.
For Voyage Rare, that is what earns MUSA its place.
